(AP) — President-elect Donald Trump said Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner , father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, calling Charles Kushner “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker." Kushner is the founder of Kushner Companies, a real estate firm. Jared Kushner is a former White House senior adviser to Trump who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka. The elder Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. Prosecutors alleged that after Charles Kushner discovered his brother-in-law was cooperating with federal authorities in an investigation, he hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation. "That was our favourite pastime," she told AAP. "It was always fun. It was always something that was part of my life." When Ms Winsor moved to Sydney she missed the bush, and the foods she had grown up with. She realised many people did not know what bush foods were, and decided to start a business to showcase how native ingredients could be used. "When I started catering it was quite a challenge initially because people's mentality around native foods was that I could possibly be only serving witchetty grubs and goanna," she said. "It was very tough to start with." Ms Winsor took a year off from her business for her mental health. It was when she returned to the business, Indigiearth, she realised the power working with native ingredients had. "That was the beginning of my healing process," she said. "It continues to be my healing, forever will be my healing. "I hit rock bottom in Sydney, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, from domestic violence and I had to get back to those childhood memories of being on Country and collecting bush foods and the happiest times of my childhood." So Ms Winsor moved back to regional NSW - this time to Mudgee - hoping to heal and create new opportunities for her business and her family. In the years since she started Indigiearth, she's watched the interest in native ingredients grow. But while interest increases, Indigenous ownership of native food operations has not, which is something Ms Winsor is passionate about rectifying. "We own less than 1.5 per cent of the industry," she said. "There's lots of companies that are using native ingredients and they're promoting their produce using our traditional knowledge ... and traditional owners are not being recognised. "I want to see more Aboriginal ownership, I want companies to start asking questions about where the ingredients are coming from." Staff and students at Cambrian College in Sudbury came together to mark 'Giving Tuesday' this year by raising money for various funds that help support students. 'Giving Tuesday' is a global movement that began in 2012 and encourages generosity and community support. Students, faculty, alumni, and community and industry partners of Cambrian College spent the day collecting donations for different funds the college has in place to help students. They include scholarships and bursaries, the student food bank, the emergency hardship fund, and the Equipment Renewal Fund. The Equipment Renewal Fund was identified as the top priority for this year's campaign. It's used to make sure students have access to the latest equipment and technology in classrooms, labs, and workshops. "It could be something as simple as a new piece of equipment down in trades to support our welding students, for example, all the way up to IT-based technology for students in our business programs," said Brandi Braithwaite, director of development and alumni at Cambrian College. The law defines lobbyists as those who are paid to influence legislation or regulation through direct communication with lawmakers, outside of public comments. The recent jump in new lobbyists was the highest since 2011 , when a law signed by then-Gov. But there is no doubt that winning is difficult without good quarterback play and borderline impossible in terms of competing for the Super Bowl without great quarterback play. The far more elusive aspect is actually reaching into the college ranks and securing and developing a quarterback capable of ensuring even moderate success, let alone the kind necessary to hoist a Lombardi Trophy. Between the bad luck of never being able to select a high-end quarterback and a volatile return rate that produces more busts and below-average quarterbacks than successful ones, filling the most important position on a football field can be an arduous ordeal. Or the New York Jets, who have nothing to show for the two quarterbacks they invested top-3 picks in the past seven drafts? “Identifying, projecting, acquiring and developing college quarterbacks into thriving NFL quarterbacks has and will more than likely always be as difficult a task as there is in the NFL,” Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said. Why is it so hard? So many factors contribute to the difficulties of evaluating NFL-worthy college quarterbacks and developing them into viable NFL players. There are the physical traits: arm strength, accuracy, timing and mobility. But then there are the more subtle traits unavailable to the naked eye. “So much of what you have to evaluate is stuff you don’t see on tape,” an NFL personnel executive said. “Their drive, their ability to problem solve, mental toughness to overcome and deal with the criticism and the pressure of the position. Information and teaching points have never been more accessible, thanks to the internet, multiple quarterback coaches and experts offering online film sessions. Peyton Manning’s film breakdowns of NFL quarterbacks on ESPN’s “Detail” have become appointment viewing for young quarterbacks. Former NFL quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan hosts the hugely popular “The QB School” on YouTube. Contemporary quarterbacks have also credited the Madden video football game with teaching them about coverage schemes and how to attack them. Technology has advanced over the years, providing young quarterbacks with tools such as virtual reality headsets and software to simulate defenses, timing and speed. It’s no surprise, then, that young quarterbacks such as Burrow, Stroud, Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert, Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels and Denver Broncos rookie Bo Nix were immediate contributors. “There are plenty of examples of highly successful young quarterbacks,” one NFL personnel executive said. “You can’t overlook the wins.” Nevertheless, the hit rate for high-end quarterbacks has not improved over the years. “It’s always been difficult to evaluate this position,” an NFL front office executive said. “And those unseen traits separate the ones who can and the ones who can’t.” Flawed process, in some cases Much of what goes right or wrong for a young quarterback comes down to the same age-old principles. “It still depends on the person and the situation,” Snead said. “The situation they are leaving and coming into.” Along with new collective bargaining rules that have reduced the time players can practice and be present in their team facilities, young quarterbacks are beholden to the infrastructure of the teams that draft them. Depending on the coaching, personnel and stability of the franchise, it can set them up for success or failure. Some young quarterbacks are forced to play before they are ready out of necessity. If they don’t have adequate help around them, that often leads to struggles, impatience and stunted growth. “Quarterbacks don’t get enough time to develop,” an NFL personnel executive said. “There is pressure to play right away. College quarterbacks are taking Football 101, and everyone wants to rush them to Football 500.” The Jets moved on from Sam Darnold, whom they drafted third overall in 2017, after just three seasons. The Cleveland Browns drafted Baker Mayfield first overall in that same draft. They got rid of him within four years. Now in Minnesota, Darnold has the 10-2 Vikings in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Mayfield’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied for first place in the NFC South after winning the division and a playoff game last season. At their previous stops, their teams didn’t have the patience or wherewithal to commit and execute a development plan. But to abruptly switch to another makes the process even more difficult. In that order.” It was the observation of a longtime editorial team member who realized that no matter what stories we thought were most important, our readers would always let us know with their clicks, letters and comments that they’d rather be reading about animals. To that end, we have compiled a list of our favourite North Shore animal stories of 2024. No gulls allowed: Raptors employed to patrol North Shore dump In February, reporter Brent Richter and multimedia reporter Alanna Kelly visited the North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre where, for the last five years, Metro Vancouver has been using trained raptors to scare off seagulls. There, they met Poquito, an eight-year-old Harris’ hawk who is the enforcer around the dump. “Just seeing him, they know that he’s a hawk, and he’s a predator, he’s apex to them,” said his handler. “And he is very good at his job.” Without any kind of deterrent, the transfer station might look like something along the lines of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1952 classic The Birds, with gulls getting in the way of people and machinery, coating the vehicles and visitors with guano, and creating public health and safety risks. So when someone sent us a tip about four of them hanging around together in Deep Cove, we – at first – didn’t believe it. After all, cougars are solitary aren’t they? The Conservation Officer Service confirmed though that they had received numerous reports describing a family unit of three kittens and one adult female cougar. Cougars are more likely to stick near semi urban areas when they have young because of the concentration of prey species such as deer, and racoons, said the COS, “They were so majestic. They’re really amazing animals,” one neighbour said. “The chances of spotting a single cougar is so unlikely. A slew of acronyms and projects have been launched since the push towards liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation (in 1991). Other landmark measures unleashed enthusiasm. These include the Right to Information Act (2005), the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act (2013), Panchayat Raj initiatives (1993), GST reforms (2017), the Jan Lokpal Movement, the Digital India Mission (2015), the Government e-marketplace (2016), Aadhar (2010 onwards), and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI, 2016). In the field of welfare and social inclusion, we’ve seen the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT, 2013), the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana for opening millions of bank accounts (PMJDY, 2014), and the earlier Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (better known as MGNREGA, 2005). Goa, at one stage, surprised the rest of the nation by passing its own fairly efficient Right to Information Act, 1997, when Pratapsing Rane was the chief minister of the state. For some time, the rest of the nation was closely watching how this was being implemented, and prominent intellectual-politicians like Union minister Arun Shourie expressed an interest in understanding the workings of this law. Given what Thomas overcame this year, I give him the slight edge over Nabers in 2025, but it's a tiny difference. They might go back-to-back in a lot of leagues. For now, I figure they'll land somewhere around the Pick 12-13 turn, but I wouldn't be shocked if they become even pricier than that. Forget landing them in Round 3, that's not going to happen. McConkey will be a fantasy building block in Year 2 McConkey's was doubly stinging for the Patriots, who traded the pick that became McConkey to the Chargers back in April, then shortly after selected one of the rookie flops of the year, WR Ja'Lynn Polk. McConkey's true upside was likely shielded at Georgia, where he and TE Brock Bowers didn't get to play in weekly shootouts. Does McConkey have potential Cooper Kupp upside down the road? It sure seems like the rookie is constantly open. He feels like a perfect Round 3 pick next year. Worthy's stock on the rise The flow of Worthy's rookie season was similar to how the Chiefs handled Rashee Rice last year — soft-pedal things early, then turn it on late. Of course, Worthy and Rice play much different roles, but the cadence of their seasons was similar. I suspect Worthy probably lands around Round 5 in 2025 drafts. Bucs' offseason decisions will impact McMillan McMillan was slow to earn fantasy trust from managers, as he finally climbed over the 50% rostered tag late this week. But with two touchdowns Sunday, that gives him six spikes in his last four games, part of the reliable Tampa Bay carnival. It will be interesting to see how Tampa Bay handles Chris Godwin, a pending free agent, after the season. If Godwin doesn't return, McMillan probably makes sense around Rounds 5-6. With Godwin back, it's a trickier call. The Buccaneers might also lose OC Liam Coen, who's been brilliant with the play sheet. Harrison, you ask? I suspect Harrison is a third-round pick next year — a bet on the talent, even if you don't trust the infrastructure. Kyler Murray and Harrison never completely worked out the kinks. Two other non-quarterback rookies deserve a Week 17 nod as we complete this look-ahead. Bucky Irving, star in the making Bucky Irving grabbed the RB3 slot in championship week on the strength of 190 total yards against the Carolina sieve. He basically threw Rachaad White out of the way in the Tampa backfield — Irving collected 20 carries and 24 touches compared to six and seven, respectively, for White. I don't think White is a bad player but Irving sure looks like a special one. Sounds like Irving might be a second-round pick next year, no later than Round 3. Brock Bowers is the new TE1 Bowers, of course, rewrote all those rookie tight end rules that Sam LaPorta worked on a year ago. Bowers came on late in Sunday's win over the Saints, securing all of his targets for a solid 7-77-0 line. His touchdown count of four is a little light, but consider the limited quarterbacks he's been playing with. And let's also acknowledge on the all-time rookie TE yardage chart, albeit Bowers had the benefit of a thicker schedule. Kyle Pitts once challenged that Ditka yardage record, falling just short. Pitts has been a maddening fantasy player since, but Bowers looks like something that will last. Maybe the Raiders upgrade at QB, maybe not, but I don't think it matters. Bowers should be the first tight end selected next year, figuring that will be Round 2-3 in pretty much every league.
